Todorov's Narrative Theory

There are 5 stages to a narrative (story) and Todorov states that every plot tends to follow said stages. These include: Equilibrium: The start of the narrative. Typically it shows a world with little to no disturbances and usually shows a happy beginning. Disruption: Then the plot takes a turn and there is a certain part of the narrative that ends up taking the story into disruption. Realisation of the Disruption: The characters in the narrative will then become aware of the disruption mentioned previously. They tend to take action or plan to take action as soon as they realise what is going on. Process of restoring the equilibrium: The plot then follows the main character(s) trying to combat the disturbance and they aim to restore the world to what it was (it's original equilibrium). Restored Equilibrium: At the end of the narrative the world is back to normal and normality can resume once more.

Pitch - Music Video Ideas

One idea we thought about to use for our project was M.I.A - Paper Planes. We then brainstormed about what we could use as a narrative/performance in our music video. We intend to make a very loose narrative about summer holidays. We would intend to get shots of places like airports and airplanes, resorts, pools, beaches, bars etc. On top of this we would add areas of lip syncing as a way of also adding in areas of performance in the video. Another idea we came up with was to use the song Day and Night - Kid Cudi. We then thought about a narrative where we would drive around a busy town in the daytime and film lots of footage there, and then do the same again but at night, and then in the video make the comparisons between the day life of the city and the night life. We would also use time lapses both on the busy street and the interior of the car. This is the idea that we decided to go with in the end.

Risks that actually happened

During the production of the video Will and I were driving the Southend to resume filming on our video. My car that we were using to travel broke down. This meant that we had to push the car down the road meaning that we missed out on shooting for the night. Due to the fact that we are using an old car for the filming this means we would have to be prepared next time for an event like this to happen. We could prevent this next time by taking a jump pack in order to prevent the car from breaking down.

Inspirations and Influences

Whilst Will and I watched a previous music video the students had used time lapse very effectively to show how many people walked through a city street. We thought that we could try and use this effectively by putting it on the dash board of my car to show the whole journey in a short time for the effect. This would show the audience how we changed during the 'Day n Nite'. Will and I watched a music video by a rapper in the hip-hop community who enjoyed putting his cars in the shots of the video, he done this very effectively by using a low angle shot in order to show the car close up and to show it as powerful. The car shot is effective for the audience as the car is the only thing in the shot, Will and I have decided to use this shot as my car is going to be the main point to the video. Another influence that we have had is the actual video for Kid Cudi's 'Day n Nite' this is the setting of arcades and colorful places at night as this is very vibrant and...
