Representation in music video - Age

Representation in music videos can vary in different ways due to many factors, these could include target audience, genre and many more. This then prevents there being a set way in which different parts of society are represented in music videos. However, there is a general consensus in music videos about how age is represented. The stereotypes of the elderly generally translates to music video as well. This includes things like the inability to do normal things, having medical complications, and using objects associated with the elderly i.e. a knitting set and mobility scooters. For example in Avicii's "Waiting For Love" there is an elderly man seeming to be unable to complete menial tasks such as getting into bed, there is also a small scene where the elderly man is taking many different pills for a supposed medical condition(s), also the man uses a mobility scooter to get around outside. The stereotypes of young people can equally offensive in that they are shown t...

Representation in music video - Sexuality

Representation in music videos can vary in different ways due to many factors, these could include target audience, genre and many more. This then prevents there being a set way in which different parts of society are represented in music videos. However, there is a general consensus in music videos about how sexuality is represented. In most music videos in this modern era they tend to not cover a lot of relationships other than a heterosexual sexualty due to this being the main feelings of their target audience. many music videos play upon the feelings of their audiences or show a relationship that is heterosexual breaking up or forming. this is a very popular type of show to be in a music video due to the amount of people that can relate to this. Drake plays a large part in this by having several of his music videos having this role play and storyline in it. This then allows his audience to relate to the situations that Drake puts himself and others into on his music videos. One...

Representation in music videos - Gender

Representation in music video can vary in different ways due to many factors, these could include target audience, genre and many more. This then prevents there being a set way in which different parts of society are represented in music videos. However, there is a general consensus in music videos about how gender is represented. Male - Men tend to be perceived as being competitive, there is a tendency for males to subordinate females as well. Men are usually seen to be having a high amount of strength, drive and ambition. They are presented this way due to them flexing all of their wealth and sexuality. They seem to look more important and strong when they have lots of expensive items and clothing as well as a submissive female to further enhance their dominance. Female - women are most likely known to be shown as sexual symbols among media and music videos as a whole, however, they can be shown as powerful like in Brittany Spears Toxic. One of the main causes of women being powe...

Purpose of a music video

There are multiple reasons as to why someone would want to make a music video. Usually artists think that making an additional piece of media to go along with the song will boost sales and/or popularity of the song. Boosting popularity means that more money will be made from the song, music artists tend to need more sales than ever to turn a profit rom their songs, as there is the problem of piracy where 95% of music is pirated online which puts a huge dent in the money earned from making music. Artists will also release music videos in order to give their audience an additional understanding of the lyrics in the song. this is due to the fact that the visual representation allows the users to understand what the artist actually means by the lyrics and not just assume due to fan theory. Some music videos as well are sometimes more popular than the actual song and this will promote the song and therefore gain popularity and fame for the artist. the popularity of the music video could t...

Evaluation of preliminary task

The purpose of us doing the preliminary task was to gain some experience of how to make a music video on a basic level. This includes learning how to lip sync correctly as well as make the pace of the video work in time with the tempo of the music. We tried to go down the comedic route on the prelim video in order to keep the audience engaged during the video. This was shown by the props and camera shot e.g. the toy guitar and zoom on the characters facial expressions. Now that we have a basic knowledge of how to use the editing techniques to make an effective music video, we could now refine them when making our actual music video to make it even better.  The costumes that were used in the prelim were not thought through very well as we were recording the prelim in school so therefore we just used the costumes we were already in - school uniform. Codes and conventions of our prelim Lip Syncing Our first experience of lip syncing was accurate. It seemed to line up well, if w...

Props and Costumes

We intended to keep our music video basic in terms of what to use for props and costume. The main prop we used was the car. this was a very effective prop as it allowed us to have many more possibilities when it came to filming the video. The car also relates to our audience of young adults, this is due to the fact that at this age people will be starting to pass their driving test which leads to their attention to be towards the car and therefore be more intrigued with the music video and feel a connection with the character. We used this to get many of our shots of the surrounding town as well as filming our lip syncing section inside of the car. Otherwise we would use the setting to use as props e.g. the arcade machines. This kind of setting could appeal to our target audience as a casino is a place of amusement that attracts a lot of teenagers and young adults as a place of amusement. The costumes were kept basic. We aimed to have a casual look as it is just someone driving and...

Website Analysis - Kid Cudi's website

This is our artist Kid Cudi's own website. He uses this to hold information about his merchandise, tours and other information about himself and his music. the main focus of this front page that we have found on his website is to draw attention to what was his upcoming concert on the 14th of November, this page is the first thing you are presented with when you are to open the page from the standard link to the page. however, this countdown on screen has not been taken down so this has led to the countdown going the other way. This means that since November 14 when the countdown has ended it has started counting the days after that date which has been displayed on screen, we took this screenshot of the sit on December 5th this is 21 days after November 14th. This shows lack of effort being put into the website if a mistake like this has been not fixed. The website is quite basic, this is due to the fact that the website does not contain loads of information about the star hims...

Denotation and Connotation

The general theme of our music video is to do with loneliness. So most of our shots will usually feature one main character either completely alone or if there are people in the shot, they won't be in the forefront and have any relevance to the main character. This makes them stand out as lonely. We also aim to have the main character in a setting of darkness but surrounded by bright and vibrant lights. This makes them seem excluded from the light round him and emphasises the feeling of loneliness as he is being left alone in the dark.

Favourite music video

Thriller by Micheal Jackson is a favourite music video for myself and will. This is due to the iconic story line and being so ahead of its time when the video was first created. Michael Jackson's Thriller was thought to be one of the pivotal music videos that inspired other music videos to have strong narratives and actually have video content in the music video which is purely narrative and not just being a video for the music from start to finish e.g. LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem. The reason why this music video is very effective is the fact that it goes out the way to go against the codes and conventions of music videos by having the music video and narrative lasting for a very long 13 minutes instead of the average 3 minutes. This allows the music video to go outside of the codes and conventions of common music videos in this current stage in time, further interesting myself and will as the music video stand out from the rest and makes it unique.

Codes and Conventions of a music video

Lip Syncing A common part of a music video would be the artist or actor within the video lip syncing during the song. Lip syncing is when the artist or an actor in the video matches their mouth movements with the lyrics to the song to appear as if they are singing it. This could be the chorus or random parts within the song. The lip syncing can be done at anytime during the song there is no codes and conventions which show that the lip syncing would commonly be done at certain points. Artist Appearance It is very likely that the artist will make an appearance during the video, this is shown through a small appearance like ed sheerans music video for A team. Or it could be an appearance like Beyonce in single ladies. this allows the viewers of the music video to recognize who the artist is and also if the video becomes a success the artist is more widely recognized. An example of an artist that does not appear in their music videos would be Avicci as he does not show his face in his...
