Codes and conventions of the genre

The codes and conventions of pop and hip hop usually present the star image as the main focus, which also leads to them being the most powerful throughout the music video. Techniques that make them look powerful include using things like low-angled shots to make themselves seem larger than the audience to demonstrate their power over us. There is also a frequent use of close up shots which further illustrate their power. They also spend a lot of time in the video itself, thus giving the audience the message that they must be important since they are always in the video. While performing there tends to be actors or props that can intensify the power of the star image as well. This includes things like attractive women to make them seem desirable, women are often used in these videos to look attractive and make the artist seem more power and they are often left mostly irrelevant to the song. The artist also tends to wear a lot of expensive jewelry to demonstrate their wealth and succes...

Media Theories Used In Our Video WIP

Uses and Gratifications Theory - We intend for our music video to entertain out audience. This is usually the case for every single music video and we feel we should apply it to ours as well. We also feel our music video will provide an opportunity for the audience to escape the boredom. Roland Bathes denotations and connotations - We have used the lighting and editing to try and make some connotations. Such as using the darkness to try and make the main character seem isolated, lonely and separated from all of the lights around him. Levi Strauss - in the video it can be argued that we have used the work of Levi. this is due to the fact that we have used the 'light vs dark'. By this I mean that we use the night and the artificial light contrast in order to add to the effectiveness of the lights.

Representations in Music Videos - Ethnicity

Representation in music videos can vary in different ways due to many factors, these could include target audience, genre and many more. This then prevents there being a set way in which different parts of society are represented in music videos. However, there is a general consensus in music videos about how ethnicity is represented. White people are represented in music videos in a number of different ways. They are shown to be the main focus and mostly the 'good guys' also they can be shown to be having a good time and not in any danger so therefore a good influence. However this can be argued to not be the case in some cases due to the rock and punk genre, some may argue this is true in the rap genre as well. Black people are commonly shown to be violent and not an overall good influences for their audience. They are seen as the more boisterous and aggressive in the music video media. For example in Bugzy Malone's track 'I Suggest' he is shown to be in pris...

Lyric Analysis - Kid Cudi Day n Night

This is a quote from Kid Cudi explaining to his audiecne why he wrote the song Day n Nite. ' My uncle that I lived with passed in 2006. We were actually beefing because he forced me out the house when I didn’t have another situation set up, so I was bitter. I never apologized for it, and that kills me. That’s why I wrote ‘Day ’N’ Nite.’' The track serves as Cudi’s justification for this “beef” with his deceased uncle, and the way he deals with the pain of their unresolved issues. The drugs help him “run,” but it’s the madness of the industry and making it that caused the problems in the first place. The lyrics of the song will either make you relate or feel sorry for the character he is singing about in the song, Kid Cudi explains very well the feelings and actions of the character and this is due to the fact that he is singing about himself. He also states in his explanation of the song that it kills him that he never apologized to his uncle for being bitter towards him ...

Production Work- marking

Level 3  The candidate is expected to demonstrate proficiency in the creative use of most of the following technical skills: • shooting material appropriate to the task set; including controlled use of the camera, attention to framing, variety of shot sizes and close attention to mise en scene • editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer and making selective and appropriate use of shot transitions, captions and other effects • recording and editing sound with images appropriately. Where a candidate has worked in a group, a proficient contribution to construction is evident. Video At 2.10 the video is short. There are some nice touches in this video in terms of the timings of the edits. The tone is captured well and some of the angles and shot choices are effective.  The camera is controlled and used appropriately. The video is a little repetitive. Research and planning marking

Level 2 8–11 marks • Planning and research evidence may be incomplete. • There is basic research into similar products and a potential target audience. • There is basic work on shotlists, layouts, drafting, scripting or storyboarding. • There is basic organisation of actors, locations, costumes or props. • Time management may not be good. • There is basic skill in the use of digital technology or ICT in the presentation. • There are basic communication skills. • There is a basic level of care in the presentation of the research and planning. Most of the detailed work here has been done by Will. You have produced some convincing analyses of music videos. You have attempted most of the tasks set out for you in the guide but not in any real depth. Some of the work on history and purpose of music video was good. This blog is not in any way media rich despite you highlighting this as a problem in last year's blog! The mood board post is empty. Why do an analysis of a Nike webs...
