Pete Fraser's Music Video Creation Theory

Step 1 'Limber up' - Learn the software and techniques you are going to use such as the editing software and learn how to lip sync. Practice with getting the lip syncing to look as good as possible, as badly done lip syncing can ruin the entire product. Other activities that can be done include analyzing and making notes from other music videos, both done by professional artists as well as previous students who have done the course. Another task to do and possibly the most rewarding in terms of how to learn making a music video is doing a preliminary task where you can experiment and make a shorter version of your final product to get to learn at first hand all of the equipment and techniques you will use.

Step 2 Choosing the right track - He recommends to not pick a popular song, or your favorite song. This is because if you pick a popular song, the music video will also most likely be popular and therefore people will be aware of what the original looks like. As a result if you try and make a music video to rival the original one, chances are you are going to be completely outdone, as you may not have the skills or equipment to compete with the original, let alone the budget. Fraser recommends to choose a short song (one that is around 3 and a half minutes) as doing a son that is extremely long will only increase your work load unnecessarily, so it is best to keep it short.

Step 3 Write a plan of action - Start of by having a clear concept of what you are going to do. Whether is be a performance music video or a narrative, or maybe a mix of the both, just have a basic outline of what you're aiming for. Remember to keep your idea realistic and make sure you can actually execute it effectively when filming it. It is also always better to be original, as it makes your video stand out from others and make it all the more effective.

Step 4 Plan for everything - Things to plan for include making a storyboard, this can be shared with the people who will help you create your music video so they can get a visual idea as to what you want. Another way to prepare is to make sure you procure your equipment and everything you need and ensure you have it to bring with you whenever you need to work, it is also better to film as early as possible as it leaves you with plenty of room to make changes so you can make your final products even better. The sooner you plan and start to work on the project, it gives you more time to think and change things around if you want to.

Step 5 Use the blog properly - It's good to have a 'media rich' blog, where you use various types of formatting, this can boost your marks so it is always a good idea to variety. It  is also good to use photos and videos that spark interest and gives you  lots of good ideas to talk about.

Step 6 The shoot - Make sure you are aware of the weather before going out to shoot (especially if you are filming outside). Make sure to bring costumes and props that should've been discussed in pre-planning. When shooting, it is best to do multiple shots of one scene so you have lots of content to work with. It is always good to prepare with a health and safety assessment to make sure no one is hurt on the job.

Step 7 The raw footage - When you have the footage for your video it is best to organize so you know where certain bits are, this makes the editing process much quicker as you are not looking through all your footage to find one specific part. It's best to import any footage you get (whether you plan on using it or not) as soon as you can and preferably onto a laptop or other portable device that can use editing software, that way you can get to work on it whenever you want, whenever you have free time. Having too much footage is not a bad thing, but remember to make it manageable and realistic.

Step 8 Editing - When it comes to editing, the best thing to do first is to sync the video to the audio in a general sense, just put all the scenes in the right places and cut the size of certain clips to make the timings correct on the lip syncing. Once the timings are completed in a general sense, you can then start to edit the tempo of the music with the cuts of the video which will make it look vastly more professional. You should leave any visual effects until last, as it isn't worth taking the time to add all these visual effects when you may need to change some scenes around in the video later. It is a good idea to constantly submit your work to gain constant feedback and advice on improvements.

Step 9 Feedback - Whether it is a work in progress or your intended finished piece, it is always to good to get feedback so you can improve it based on the advice given to you by your peers. It is always a good idea to get feedback from all sorts of people, such as friends, teachers, fellow A level media studies students etc. You should take all feedback into account as it can also be used in your evaluation and how you formed your final product.

Step 10 Evaluation - Once your video is completed you will need to do an evaluation. This can be a good opportunity to not only criticize your work and explain what you could've done better, but you can also showcase what you have done well and what you have learned from making this video. You could do things like making a mood board/doing a textual analysis of your own video, as well as analyzing other things you have done such as the magazine advert of the digipak.

Todorov's Narrative Theory

There are 5 stages to a narrative (story) and Todorov states that every plot tends to follow said stages. These include: Equilibrium: The start of the narrative. Typically it shows a world with little to no disturbances and usually shows a happy beginning. Disruption: Then the plot takes a turn and there is a certain part of the narrative that ends up taking the story into disruption. Realisation of the Disruption: The characters in the narrative will then become aware of the disruption mentioned previously. They tend to take action or plan to take action as soon as they realise what is going on. Process of restoring the equilibrium: The plot then follows the main character(s) trying to combat the disturbance and they aim to restore the world to what it was (it's original equilibrium). Restored Equilibrium: At the end of the narrative the world is back to normal and normality can resume once more.

Evaluation 3

There is currently no feedback on our music video as well as the digipak and the website. The only communication we have with our audience is from a survey about music videos in general. We learnt that our main audience were teenagers that mostly all agreed that music videos made songs much better. This is good news for us, as we have picked a genre of song (hip-hop/rap) that generally appeals to a younger target audience Results also show that they thin the main purpose of a music video is to entertain, as a result, we have attempted to make the music video as entertaining as possible. We did this through trying to make it aesthetic as well as relatable. The survey also shows that people think aesthetics is also very important, therefore we tried to focus on some interesting shots in our music video to try and match what people think.  Results also indicate that our audience tend to enjoy both music videos with narrative and performance at the same time. Intended Institution Analysis

This is a post that explains what intended institution we will want to have. This consists of the TV institution in which we would like the music video to be presented on. A lot has to be taken into account when choosing the TV station, this would consist of the kind of viewers that watch the stations. For example it would be a bad idea to have the music video shown on a classical music channel when the target audience for the video is between 16-30 aged people. also the viewers of that channel would most likely not like the video so therefore it would get bad reviews and a name. Will and i have chosen to use the TV channel 'VEVO' to present our video as this is a well known music channel and the majority of viewers of the channel are within our target audiences ages. this would be a very effective channel to use as it would most likely get out to the intended audience and also would act as a way of getting the video some popularity and feedback from the audience.
