Purpose of a music video

There are multiple reasons as to why someone would want to make a music video. Usually artists think that making an additional piece of media to go along with the song will boost sales and/or popularity of the song. Boosting popularity means that more money will be made from the song, music artists tend to need more sales than ever to turn a profit rom their songs, as there is the problem of piracy where 95% of music is pirated online which puts a huge dent in the money earned from making music.

Artists will also release music videos in order to give their audience an additional understanding of the lyrics in the song. this is due to the fact that the visual representation allows the users to understand what the artist actually means by the lyrics and not just assume due to fan theory. Some music videos as well are sometimes more popular than the actual song and this will promote the song and therefore gain popularity and fame for the artist. the popularity of the music video could therefore promoted on social media and then due to the song being listened to so frequently this would be earning the artist money.

Sometimes an artist will want to create a music video to express their creativity. Avid musicians will find that making a video alongside their music gives them a chance to further boost their creativity an show off their artistic abilities both through sound and video. Such as the band Ok Go, they tend to make very interesting music videos that appeal to lots of people due to their ingenuity and uniqueness. This then grabs their audiences attention and even those that are not into their music but want to watch the unique music video for entertainment purposes.

The music video that is released shows a lot about the artist themselves, this is their interests and what they stand for shown in a video therefore this can gain them more fans due to them feeling more related to the artist themselves if they share the same interests. An example of this would be Otis Jay-Z which in the music video they tear apart a rolls Royce car in order to drive it and drift it around an airport hanger. this gained a lot of attention from people that are interested in cars and therefore expanded his audience.

Representation in music video - Sexuality

Representation in music videos can vary in different ways due to many factors, these could include target audience, genre and many more. This then prevents there being a set way in which different parts of society are represented in music videos. However, there is a general consensus in music videos about how sexuality is represented. In most music videos in this modern era they tend to not cover a lot of relationships other than a heterosexual sexualty due to this being the main feelings of their target audience. many music videos play upon the feelings of their audiences or show a relationship that is heterosexual breaking up or forming. this is a very popular type of show to be in a music video due to the amount of people that can relate to this. Drake plays a large part in this by having several of his music videos having this role play and storyline in it. This then allows his audience to relate to the situations that Drake puts himself and others into on his music videos. One...

Favourite music video

Thriller by Micheal Jackson is a favourite music video for myself and will. This is due to the iconic story line and being so ahead of its time when the video was first created. Michael Jackson's Thriller was thought to be one of the pivotal music videos that inspired other music videos to have strong narratives and actually have video content in the music video which is purely narrative and not just being a video for the music from start to finish e.g. LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem. The reason why this music video is very effective is the fact that it goes out the way to go against the codes and conventions of music videos by having the music video and narrative lasting for a very long 13 minutes instead of the average 3 minutes. This allows the music video to go outside of the codes and conventions of common music videos in this current stage in time, further interesting myself and will as the music video stand out from the rest and makes it unique.

Representations in Music Videos - Ethnicity

Representation in music videos can vary in different ways due to many factors, these could include target audience, genre and many more. This then prevents there being a set way in which different parts of society are represented in music videos. However, there is a general consensus in music videos about how ethnicity is represented. White people are represented in music videos in a number of different ways. They are shown to be the main focus and mostly the 'good guys' also they can be shown to be having a good time and not in any danger so therefore a good influence. However this can be argued to not be the case in some cases due to the rock and punk genre, some may argue this is true in the rap genre as well. Black people are commonly shown to be violent and not an overall good influences for their audience. They are seen as the more boisterous and aggressive in the music video media. For example in Bugzy Malone's track 'I Suggest' he is shown to be in pris...
