Our final piece uses forms of codes and conventions within its genre of music videos. the genre is pop and therefore is often shown in a number of ways so that the audiences can clarify what genre it is.

In pop genres the music videos are usually very vibrant and fun for the audience to enjoy. We have chosen to adapt our music video to this convention by including lots of neon and bright signs and objects. we have also done this to relate the music video to the original video in which Kid Cudi uses animation to get bright colours and splashes of colour on the screen. The is a common thing within the pop genre. we interpreted this by including the shots of the neon signs in the setting along with the cars passing by and the arcade machines . This allows the setting to be shown for the audience along with the convention of the lights.

The general feel for music videos that are aimed at the target audience is that partying is shown to be a big part for them. The reason for this is to relate to the audience as this is what they would be doing, however, Will and I have chosen to go against this convention as we feel that this is not what every member of our target audience would like to be doing and therefore we should give them a music video that stands out within the genre and not having the stereotypical actions within the video. However we did include the stereotypical drinking that is shown in the pop genre music videos to a high standard in order to allow the audience to recognise the genre from these little shots.

The genre of our music video also tends to make a large use of showing off success. This is usually done through showing an expensive lifestyle e.g. cars and apparel. This way it makes the audience look up to the artist. Another way that reinforces this convention is that they tend to pose with lots of desirable women to, again, show off their success. We have decided to go against this convention, as instead of trying to make an idol for our audience we instead tried to make a video that is relatable, our general reoccurring theme of loneliness is something that runs high in the teenager demographic. This may make our video more popular as finding something relatable may allow more people to like our video.

It is very common within the pop genre for the artist to be shown within the music video, this is due to the fact that the artist is usually just as popular as their songs and therefore the audience would like to see the artist within the music video. Will and I have chosen to have a figure in the video that is implied to be the artist to the song due to the lip sinking. The lip syncing is also a very large convention within music videos in the pop genre and we have included this in the video in order to use the popular convention in order to relate to the common music videos within this genre. we included this in both locations that the video is based around in order to show the difference in mood and character throughout the video through close ups of the lip synching.
In the genre it is commonly shown for the actor to be in a struggle and for them to be involved with drugs or alcohol. In this shot the actor is shown to have their head in their hands after the heavy night of drinking that is shown in the video. This is not a convention of the music video however it is commonly shown so Will and I have chosen to include it for the video. In the shot the colour has also been dulled down in order to show the more depressive tone.

This is similar to the previous screenshot in that they both involve the depressed story line of the character and heavily involves the drinking of the actor. In this shot we have tried to show the excessive drinking of the character in that he is drinking straight from the bottle instead of the glass. The genre is also very commonly involved around the use of drugs and alcohol by the cast in the music video so therefore Will and I decided to also implement this into our recreation of the music video.

This shot is used to show the loneliness of the character and also the alcoholism that he has developed over the time. The neon lights that i have mentioned above has also come into play here, however, the lights are not neon but they are bright and unnatural lights that highlight the character. This also enables the link to the song title to be established.
The alcohol is a large part of the music video, however, not being a convention of the pop genre it is common among the pop genre music videos. The vibrant colours of the fruit in the fruit bowl on the lewft of the shot was implemented in order to enable a contrast between the dark and dull setting that the shot takes place in. The bright colours also links to the convention that then pop genre has in that it is to be vibrant and colourful for the audience to enjoy.

This is a shot taken from the video in which the actor is inside of the arcade. This follows the convention of the the pop genre by being very vibrant and pleasing to the eye for then audience. It does this through the bright colours and the large background size in order for the audience to have a view of the arcade. The reason we had chosen this shot was because of the fact that it allows the setting to be established well as well as allows lots of information to be shown to the audience with the actor not having too much full face screen time at the same time.

Todorov's Narrative Theory

There are 5 stages to a narrative (story) and Todorov states that every plot tends to follow said stages. These include: Equilibrium: The start of the narrative. Typically it shows a world with little to no disturbances and usually shows a happy beginning. Disruption: Then the plot takes a turn and there is a certain part of the narrative that ends up taking the story into disruption. Realisation of the Disruption: The characters in the narrative will then become aware of the disruption mentioned previously. They tend to take action or plan to take action as soon as they realise what is going on. Process of restoring the equilibrium: The plot then follows the main character(s) trying to combat the disturbance and they aim to restore the world to what it was (it's original equilibrium). Restored Equilibrium: At the end of the narrative the world is back to normal and normality can resume once more.

There is currently no feedback on our music video as well as the digipak and the website. The only communication we have with our audience is from a survey about music videos in general. We learnt that our main audience were teenagers that mostly all agreed that music videos made songs much better. This is good news for us, as we have picked a genre of song (hip-hop/rap) that generally appeals to a younger target audience Results also show that they thin the main purpose of a music video is to entertain, as a result, we have attempted to make the music video as entertaining as possible. We did this through trying to make it aesthetic as well as relatable. The survey also shows that people think aesthetics is also very important, therefore we tried to focus on some interesting shots in our music video to try and match what people think.  Results also indicate that our audience tend to enjoy both music videos with narrative and performance at the same time. Intended Institution Analysis

This is a post that explains what intended institution we will want to have. This consists of the TV institution in which we would like the music video to be presented on. A lot has to be taken into account when choosing the TV station, this would consist of the kind of viewers that watch the stations. For example it would be a bad idea to have the music video shown on a classical music channel when the target audience for the video is between 16-30 aged people. also the viewers of that channel would most likely not like the video so therefore it would get bad reviews and a name. Will and i have chosen to use the TV channel 'VEVO' to present our video as this is a well known music channel and the majority of viewers of the channel are within our target audiences ages. this would be a very effective channel to use as it would most likely get out to the intended audience and also would act as a way of getting the video some popularity and feedback from the audience.
